Welcome to Sounds Like Now! My name is Brian Sacawa and I do many things. I am a saxophonist and currently serve as a member of The United States Army Field Band from Washington, D.C. I co-founded and curate Baltimore's award-winning Mobtown Modern Music Series. I'm also a Category 2 bicycle racer for the Pyramid Elite Racing team.

Good taste

Good taste

As if I needed another project, but it’s something that I should have started long, long ago. I am astounded when I think about all the wines and coffees I’ve tasted and have absolutely no record or recollection of. Well, no more! Corks & Beans will serve as an online journal and archive of the various wines that cross my palate, the coffees I brew, and the espressos I pull. I’ll also share some of my brewing methods, techniques, and experiments whether they yield success...  Continue reading »
Redefinition

Redefinition

When I first began life on the internet, the purpose was singular and simple: to have a static website designed to promote my work as a saxophonist. The site would house things like my biography, performance schedule, contact information, as well as audio clips and a list of pieces that I’d premiered or that had been written for me. Pretty standard fare even today, just about 10 years later, for performers looking to put themselves out there in the world. It was a great tool...  Continue reading »

First stop Chile, next the world!

I got an email today from Art of the States letting me know that they’d put together a show focusing on doubles / dualities that included my recording Philip Glass’s Piece in the Shape of a Square. Apparently, this is a radio show that’s been shopped around to international broadcasters. The first to pick it up was Radio Beethoven FM in Santiago, Chile. Pretty cool. Wonder where it’ll end up next!  Continue reading »

Baltimore Magazine’s Best of Baltimore 2010

Some really amazing news came in the mail a couple weeks ago, when I found out that Baltimore Magazine had named me the MVP Arts Explorer in their 2010 Best of Baltimore issue. Here’s the blurb: As both musician (playing sax) and curator (booking the Contemporary’s excellent Mobtown Modern Music Series), Brian Sacawa has helped raise the profile of new music in Baltimore. And folks are still buzzing about Rite of Swing, Mobtown’s jazzy take on Stravinsky’s Rite, which closed out its season in May....  Continue reading »

Word Up

Though it’s a cold and snowy here in Baltimore this morning, we’re hoping to heat things up with Mobtown Modern‘s show tonight at the Contemporary Museum. This article in the Examiner this morning warmed us up a little bit already. For six years, I’ve wanted to hear my friend Ken Ueno perform his work Zansetsu live and tonight I’ll get that chance. If you’ve never heard overtone singing coupled with amplified pop rocks—Xenakis in the mouth, as Ken calls it—then don’t miss the show.  Continue reading »

Upgrading

SLN is upgrading to a newer version of WordPress. Though I don’t anticipate any problems, if there are, you’ll know what happened. Update: Upgrading is complete. Sorry for the down time. Don’t attempt updates in hotels with weak internet connections.  Continue reading »

Sax Journal Review

American Voices got a nice write-up in the current issue of the Saxophone Journal. Here are a couple choice quotes: “In performing Piece in the Shape of a Square Brian Sacawa exhibits a strong vibrant sound on saxophone with phrasing and intensity that makes the piece come alive.” And . . . All the pieces on this American Voices CD are, at the very least, extremely provocative. Brian Sacawa’s interpretive skills are laudable, and in fact, admirable. American Voices is new music for the saxophone...  Continue reading »

Gramophone review

Well, 2008 is off to a grand start as The Album continues to garner some good press. Though my appeal for a recount is still being processed by the Academy, the CD review in the December issue of Gramophone Magazine, which occupies the better part of an entire page, more than makes up for the Academy’s oversight.  Continue reading »

Movin’ on up

SLN has received a bump in the polls this year—the polls being Scott Spiegelberg’s annual Top 50 Classical Music Blogs. Using a new, and I might add, improved ranking system, we’ve skyrocketed from tied-for-49th to a very respectable 15th. This actually makes SLN the 4th best performer blog, though it’s not fair for us to be in the same category as the Violin Diaries, since I am but one person and they’ve got bloggers posting from all over the world on their aggregate site. So...  Continue reading »
