Yes, yes, yes. We now know through much startling and indisputable evidence that the internet has indeed revolutionized the classical music scene. Blogs, websites, myspaces, and all that. Who can contain all the classical/new music e-energy anymore? However, one subset of the classical music enterprise that has stayed more or less away from the internet has been “The Competition.” The only somewhat internet-based competition that comes to mind is the biennial Yamaha-sponsored Piano-e-Competition out of Minneapolis.
Well, add another e-competition to the list. Marco Mazzini, a Peruvian clarinetist and proprietor of Clariperu, a spanish-language website dedicated to the clarinet, writes to announce a completely web-based new music clarinet competition. Open to clarinetists of any age, playing any flavor of clarinet, Musical Marathon—Prize for Most Creative Interpretation will run from Jan 10 to Aug 10, 2007 (although the deadline to submit materials is July 10). There is an obligatory piece, which will be available for download on the website, that all entrants are asked to make a recording of to submit to the competition. It (the competition) is well-sponsored. The jury is reputable. And the prizes are nice. Who’s up?
